The short answer
A Canvas pairing code fails for one of four reasons: it's more than seven days old, it was already used once, it wasn't entered exactly as shown (codes are case-sensitive), or it's being used at the wrong district's Canvas. The fix is almost always a fresh code, entered exactly, at your student's own Canvas address.
Why pairing codes fail
- It expired. Pairing codes last seven days from the moment they're generated. The code your student wrote down during orientation week is long dead.
- It was already used. Each code works exactly once, for one observer. If your co-parent used it first — or you got halfway through setup and started over — that code is spent.
- It wasn't entered exactly. Codes are case-sensitive and contain no spaces. A capital O versus a zero, or a stray space from copy-paste, is enough to fail.
- Wrong Canvas address. The code only works with the district's own Canvas — the same web address your student uses. A generic Canvas login page, or another district's portal, won't accept it.
- The browser is fighting you. Some parents who fail repeatedly on the web succeed on the first try in the Canvas Parent app, or in a private/incognito window. If the code should be valid, switch tools before you switch codes.
How to get a fresh pairing code
Your student can generate one in under a minute — Canvas supports this on the web and in the Canvas Student app:
- Have your student log in to their district's Canvas. They can use the web version or the current Canvas Student app.
- On the web, open Account → Settings. In the student app, open the account/profile menu. Labels can vary slightly by app version.
- Choose "Pair with Observer." Canvas shows a short code and its expiration date.
- Use it soon, and enter it exactly. Same capitalization, no spaces. It's valid for seven days or one use, whichever comes first.
If the "Pair with Observer" button isn't there, your district has turned self-service pairing off — ask the teacher or the school's Canvas administrator for a code instead. And if you have more than one child, repeat this per student: pairing is per child, but they can all attach to your one parent account.
Where to enter it
- In the Canvas Parent app: open the menu → Manage Students → Add Student → enter the pairing code.
- On the web: go to your district's Canvas login page, choose the parent/observer sign-up option, and enter the code while creating your account.
One caveat before you burn a code: some districts set parents up automatically through their own parent portal, no pairing code needed. Orange County (OCPS) families, for example, reach Canvas through the LaunchPad portal — if that's you, start with how OCPS parent access works before troubleshooting codes.
Paired at last — now make it worth something
Getting observer access working is the annoying part, and you only do it once. But here's the honest next problem: observer access is a view, not a watchdog. You can now open each class and look — and the app's alerts are widely reported to fire inconsistently — so "I can see it" quietly becomes "I have to remember to check it."
That's the part ByBedtime takes over. It uses the same parent access you just set up — read-only, and never your school password — checks on a schedule, and sends one calm evening brief plus an alert only when something is newly missing, due tomorrow, or finally turned in. The pairing code was the setup; the nightly checking doesn't have to be your job too.
Common questions
Why is my Canvas pairing code not working?
The four usual reasons: the code expired (pairing codes last only seven days), it was already used (each code works exactly once), it was typed differently than shown (codes are case-sensitive, with no spaces), or it's being entered at the wrong place (the code only works with your student's own district Canvas address). Get a fresh code from your student's account and enter it exactly as displayed, at your district's Canvas.
How long does a Canvas pairing code last?
Seven days from when it's generated, or until it's used — whichever comes first. Each pairing code can be used exactly once, by one observer. If your code is older than a week, it's dead; generate a new one.
Can both parents use the same Canvas pairing code?
No. A pairing code is single-use, so it works for one observer account only. If two parents each want their own Canvas access, generate two codes — your student can create a new code any time from Account → Settings → Pair with Observer.
Do I need a separate pairing code for each child?
Yes. Pairing is per student. Each child generates their own code, and you add each of them to your one observer account. You don't need separate parent accounts — one account can observe all of your students.
