First, the thing nobody tells you: eCampus is Canvas
eCampus is Seminole County Public Schools' name for Canvas, the learning management system used across its middle and high schools. Parents sign in at scps.instructure.com. Every guide written about "Canvas parent access" applies to eCampus.
This matters more than it sounds. Search for "eCampus help" and you'll find a handful of school pages. Search the same question as "Canvas," and there's a decade of material. If a set of instructions mentions Canvas and yours says eCampus, you are in the right place: keep reading rather than closing the tab.
Why the app won't let you create the account
Observer signup cannot be completed in the mobile app. Seminole schools state it directly: "These steps must be completed through the web version of Canvas. The observer signup process cannot be done through the mobile app."
This is the single most common dead end for SCPS parents, and it fails in a confusing way: the app doesn't explain the restriction, so it reads as a wrong code or a broken account. The fix is order of operations, not troubleshooting: create the observer account in a browser first. Once it exists, the Canvas Parent app signs you in normally and works the way you expected.
Setting up eCampus parent access, in order
- Have your student generate a pairing code from their own eCampus account. It's generated by the student, not by you and not by the school.
- Open a browser, not the app, and go to scps.instructure.com to register as an observer.
- Enter the pairing code exactly as shown. Codes are case-sensitive, and each one pairs a single observer. If a second parent needs access, the student generates a second code.
- Get a fresh code if it's refused. Pairing codes expire and are consumed on first use, so a code that sat in a text message for a while is the usual culprit: here's the full list of reasons a code gets rejected.
- Then install the app if you want it. With the account already created, signing in is straightforward.
eCampus vs Skyward Family Access: which one to watch
Seminole families run two systems, and knowing which answers which question saves a lot of nightly scrolling.

The practical takeaway: Skyward tells you what already happened; eCampus is where you can still do something about it. An assignment sits unsubmitted in eCampus days before it lands in Skyward as a zero. That gap is the whole window for a ten-minute fix, and it's why checking only the official gradebook always feels a step behind.
Why missing work still slips past attentive parents
- "Missing" depends on the teacher. Canvas only labels work missing when a teacher sets a due date and tracks online submissions. Plenty of real classwork never gets the label, so it never appears on any missing list, in eCampus or the app.
- Alerts only fire on changes. Canvas never emails about work still outstanding, only about what changed: here's why that matters.
- Six classes, every night. Checking properly means opening each course in turn. It's the chore that gets skipped on the exact night it mattered.
- Silence isn't evidence. A quiet screen looks identical whether nothing is wrong or nothing loaded.
