Brevard Canvas parent access: why Focus can look empty.

Focus shows the grades. Canvas shows the work.

Brevard teachers get grades into Focus by two different routes. Some enter grades in Focus itself. Others keep their gradebook in Canvas and pass the grades over with a sync they set up per course. For that second group, Brevard's guide for teachers lists what has to be true before anything crosses over.

• The Canvas assignment groups have to match the Focus categories in that teacher's gradebook and be linked together.
• The Sync to SIS box has to be checked. The district says it "should be checked by default" on new assignments, but adds that "it will not retroactively apply to previously created assignments."
• The assignment title has to be no longer than 50 characters. Anything longer will not pass across.
• The teacher then syncs by hand, or signs up for the nightly sync that runs at 10 p.m.

None of that is a complaint about teachers. It's a run of ordinary setup steps, repeated for every course, by people juggling a hundred other things in the first weeks of school. The conclusion for a parent is narrower than "Focus is wrong." Where a course is graded in Canvas, Focus is a summary that arrives late, and how current it is can vary from one class to the next.

Then there is a whole category Focus was never going to show you. An assignment nobody has turned in is not a grade yet, so there is nothing for Focus to record. Canvas knows about it the moment the teacher posts a due date, while the gradebook only finds out once somebody has graded it. That gap is the entire reason parent access to Canvas is worth the twenty minutes it takes to set up.

In Brevard the pairing code usually comes from the teacher

This is where Brevard splits from the neighboring counties, and it changes who you should be emailing. Next door, the student makes the code. Brevard's own instructions run through the teacher: open the course, go to the People tab, click the three dots by a student's name, choose User Details, then Pair with Observer. Teachers can also export codes for a whole class at once, expiration dates and all.

So when you are stuck, skip "my Canvas isn't working" and ask for the exact thing: "Could you generate a Canvas observer pairing code for me?" Two things are worth putting in that email.

• Ask for one code per parent. The district is blunt about it: "Each parent must receive their own pair code." One will not cover two of you.
• Ask close to when you will use it. Brevard's guide says the code "is valid for one week or until it is used the first time, whichever is first." A code handed out at open house has often died before anyone types it in.

Some students can generate a code from their own account too, and the district's parent instructions allow for either source, so start with your student if that is quicker.

Creating the account, in order

1. Get a pairing code from your student's teacher, or from your student.
2. Go to brevardschools.instructure.com/login/canvas. This exact address is the one the district's parent guide names. The plain Canvas link takes you to a Microsoft login page built for staff and students, with no parent signup anywhere on it.
3. Choose "Parent of a Canvas User? Click Here For an Account" and fill in your name, email, a password and the code.
4. Then add the app if you want it. Brevard suggests the quick way: sign in on the website, choose QR for Mobile Login, and scan it with the Canvas Parent app. That code is good for ten minutes only, so have the phone next to you before you generate it.
5. If a code gets refused, ask for another rather than retyping it. These are the usual reasons a code fails.

What each system shows you, and when

Brevard publishes interims and report cards into Focus, which makes Focus both the official word and the late one. The same story is visible in Canvas weeks earlier.

The dates that make this urgent

• Monday, August 10, 2026. First day for most students. Kindergarten starts on Thursday, August 13, and prekindergarten on Monday, August 17. Challenger 7 Elementary, which runs year round, went back in July.
• Wednesday, September 9, 2026. The first interim period closes.
• Monday, September 14, 2026. Secondary interims published in Focus. Elementary interims follow on Wednesday, September 16.
• Tuesday, October 13, 2026. End of the first nine weeks. Report cards reach Focus on October 16 for secondary and October 20 for elementary.

Read those first two dates together. The interim period closes on September 9 and the interim itself arrives on September 14. By the time you are holding it, the window it describes has closed. Everything it tells you was visible in Canvas while there was still time to do something.

Even with access, some work stays invisible

Getting access is the start rather than the finish. "Missing" is a label only some teachers switch on, the Canvas Parent app's alerts are widely reported to misfire, and a Brevard secondary schedule means six or seven courses to open one at a time.
